Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

The Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, declared in January 2024 as Tamil Nadu’s 18th wildlife sanctuary, is spread across the Bargur Hills in Erode district, covering over 800 sq km of rich forest. Situated at the confluence of the Eastern and Western Ghats, it forms a vital ecological corridor connecting the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve, Male Mahadeshwara Hills Tiger Reserve, and the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve, enabling free movement of elephants, tigers, leopards, and other species. The sanctuary is home to diverse wildlife including gaurs, deer, wild boar, and more than 130 species of birds and 100 species of butterflies. Apart from its biodiversity, the forest also protects the catchment of the Palar River, which feeds into the Cauvery, making it crucial for water security. While six tribal habitations have been excluded to safeguard community rights, the sanctuary promises to strengthen conservation efforts, reduce human–wildlife conflict, and preserve this unique landscape for future generations.
