Thrissur Pulikali - 08 September 2025

Nestled at the heart of Kerala’s Onam celebrations, Pulikali—literally meaning “Tiger Play”—is a captivating traditional folk art performed predominantly in Thrissur on the fourth day of Onam.

Pulikali, also known as the Tiger Dance, is one of Thrissur’s most vibrant and iconic folk arts performed during the Onam festival. Held on the fourth day of Onam, the streets of Thrissur, especially around the Swaraj Round, come alive with hundreds of performers painted in striking shades of yellow, black, and red to resemble tigers and leopards. Accompanied by the powerful beats of traditional instruments like the chenda and thakil, the dancers enthrall the crowds with playful movements that mimic a tiger’s hunting and prancing. The event, believed to have been introduced over 200 years ago by the Maharaja of Cochin, celebrates Kerala’s cultural richness and collective joy. Today, Pulikali attracts thousands of spectators from across the state and beyond, making it one of the most colorful and spirited highlights of Onam in Thrissur.

This dazzling spectacle traces its origins back more than two centuries and is widely credited to Maharaja Rama Varma Sakthan Thampuran, who introduced it as a spirited addition to the harvest festivities.Years of meticulous preparation precede the event: performers remove body hair and undergo five to seven hours of painting with vibrant yellow, red, and black enamel or tempera, crafting intricate stripes that transform them into human tigers or leopards.  Today many dancers wear ready-made masks, fake teeth, tongues, whiskers, and jingling belts for added flair.

As afternoon unfolds, these “tigers”—often grouped as sangams or troupes—embark on a vibrant procession through Swaraj Round and adjoining streets in central Thrissur, dancing rhythmically to the beat of traditional percussion instruments like chenda, thakil, and chengila. The choreography cleverly enacts scenes of hunting, pouncing, and playful interaction, often accompanied by floats that highlight creativity from various villages.
