Auroville, meet the community - Day Excursion

Day Excursion Duration - 6 Hours  |   Location - Auroville, Pondicherry   |   Timing - 09.30 AM to 03.30 PM

Enjoy Auroville lifestyle for a day..

Proceed to Auroville, situated outskirt of the town, this spiritual community was founded in 1926 by Sri Aurobindo and a French-born woman known as ‘the Mother’. Observe and learn from, and about, those who choose to join, build and live this unique lifestyle.

Start your inmate tour with some conscious foodie stops, first at a famous local bakery to catch delicious organic patisseries and at one chocolate factory only using organic and vegan products, providing stores all around India.

You will be taken then through the visitor center and a few of the Auroville units which innovatively works on paper, textile, bamboo and stones. Step by the following units and interact with their artisans

Wellpaper Unit : WELL stands for "Women’s Empowerment through Local Livelihood. Initiated in 2005, in Auroville Tamil Nadu, as a tsunami rehabilitation program, Wellpaper has grown into a social enterprise model that touches the lives of over 100 women across many villages in the area.

Auroville pottery visit : Auroville potters make high fired stoneware using a wood fired natural draft. The pots are made on kick wheels and the clay is prepared by hand, so the process provides a viable alternate technology that is very relevant to rural India and in particular to the context of the Auroville project located in South India.

Svaram musical center : SVARAM Musical Instruments' pioneering products, activities and services contribute to the individual, social harmonization and wellbeing, bringing the cultural-creative and value of music into everyone‘s heart and hands.

Proceed by the Meditation center or enjoy a lecture at the Unity Pavilion : At the heart of Auroville's Hall of Peace, the second building of the Unity Pavilion complex in Auroville's International Zone, stands the Asian Peace Table. It is one of six magnificent tables created by the japanese master woodworker George Nakashima placed in chosen sites on each of the continents of the world.

Then pass by the Matri mandir (the meditation centre), a large golden sphere which seems to be emerging out of the earth, symbolizing the birth of a new consciousness. The atmosphere there is quiet and charged and leave the place for individual silent concentration.

Finally enjoy a lunch at Solar kitchen - the community Kitchen for the inmates and understand the unique living here, based on universal harmony. It derives its name from the big Solar Bowl on its roof, which provides part of the steam for cooking on all the sunny days of the year. Throughout the year approximately 1000 vegetarian lunches are prepared daily.

Optional : Later on, attend a Kolam class at Mohanam Cultural Centre in the nearby Alamkuppam village and find out about this traditional custom of drawings in the houses entrance with sparkling powders or fresh flowers, to invite the Goddess Laxmi to bring luck and prosperity...

Mohanam Cultural Centre is the work and realisation of a group of young men from the surrounding villages of Auroville who created an heritage centre to be a bridge between the traditional and the modern, the old and the young, between what is happening in Auroville and what is unfolding in the villages around.
